Pool Decks

Pool decks built to be walked on barefoot

A pool deck has a harder job than a patio: it gets wet, it gets hot, it gets splashed with chlorine and salt, and everyone on it is barefoot. We build for all four.

Why homeowners pick Keen for this

  • Cool underfoot

Knockdown spray texture — what most people call Kool Deck — is a cement-and-acrylic finish sprayed over the cured slab in light colors that shed heat instead of holding it.

  • Grip where it counts

Texture and sealer are picked for wet feet. We would rather hand you a deck that grips than one that only photographs well.

  • Water goes where we send it

Slope, drains and the tie-in to your coping get planned before the pour, not patched afterward, so rain and splash-out run away from the house.

  • New pool or old

We deck brand-new pools with our sister company Kinetic Pools and resurface tired decks around pools that have been in the ground for twenty years.

Three ways to finish a deck

Same slab underneath. The finish on top is what changes the feel, the temperature and the price.

  • Freeform pool and spa with a sprayed knockdown cool deck

    Knockdown spray texture

The classic light, grippy, cool-to-the-touch pool finish. Sprayed over the cured slab as its own visit.

  • Stamped concrete pool deck around a freeform pool and spa

    Stamped deck

Flagstone or ashlar texture around the water. Best with lighter colors so the surface stays cooler.

  • Acid-stained pool deck under shade sails around a freeform fiberglass pool

    Stained deck

Warm, variegated color that ties the deck to the house. Sealed with a non-slip additive.

Color

Color Seal, over knockdown texture.

The cool-deck finish is a sprayed knockdown texture sealed in color. The H2Cool line is the one built to stay easier underfoot in the sun — worth knowing before you fall for a shade that only comes in the standard series.

Tap a color to see which series it comes in.

These are a starting point, not a match. Screens lie about color, and so do printed cards — the chart's own fine print says a card can't be used for a final choice. Cure, weather, sun and the slab underneath all move the finished shade. Pick two or three you like here, and we'll spray real samples on your concrete before anything else happens.

Colors are shown over a sprayed knockdown texture, which is how we apply them on a pool deck. Over a different surface — a smooth slab, an overlay, an older deck — the same color reads differently.

Color Seal is made by Innovative Concrete Technology. Custom color matching is available on the Pro 220 series, and White is offered but not shown here.

How it goes

  1. 01

    Look at the whole yard

Where the water goes, where the gate is, where you will actually put chairs. The layout decision costs nothing on paper and everything once it is poured.

  2. 02

    Tear-out or overlay

If the old deck is sound we can resurface it. If it is heaving or badly cracked we tear it out — and we tell you which one you are looking at before you pay us anything.

  3. 03

    Base, steel and forms

Compacted base, reinforcing steel, forms set to the drainage plan, and expansion joints where the deck meets the house and the coping.

  4. 04

    Pour and finish

Deck goes in, gets its texture or stamp, and the coping tie-in is detailed by hand.

  5. 05

    Cure, then spray or seal

Knockdown texture and sealer go on after the slab has cured — a separate trip, which is the only way to do it properly.

What you pay, and when

One honest, fixed price, itemized in writing before we start. Half at signing and half at completion — no progress-payment ladder, no change-order surprises unless you ask us to change something. Keen work carries a one-year workmanship warranty; cracking, color variation and efflorescence are inherent to concrete and are excluded, and we say that up front rather than in the fine print.

Questions

Straight answers, before you call.

Is Kool Deck the same as what you spray?

Kool Deck is a brand name people use for the whole category. What we apply is an acrylic-and-cement knockdown texture sprayed over the cured slab as a separate visit — the same cool, grippy result, using the products we trust here on the coast.

Can you fix my existing deck instead of replacing it?

Often, yes. If the concrete is sound and reasonably flat, an overlay or a fresh knockdown texture makes it look new for a fraction of a tear-out. If the slab is lifting or the cracks are structural, resurfacing just buys you a year — and we will say so.

Do you build the pool too?

Our sister company Kinetic Pools installs fiberglass pools, and Keen pours the deck. Same family, one schedule, no middleman markup between the shell and the concrete.

How soon after the pool goes in can you deck it?

On a fiberglass pool, quickly — that is the whole advantage. Once the shell is set and the plumbing is inspected we can form and pour, which is why dig-to-deck is measured in weeks instead of the months a gunite build takes.
